With this pervious concrete project near the shores of lake Owasso, the city of Shoreview has made a major commitment to sustainable development and storm-water management.  The ambitious project has captured the attention of many engineers and architects as well as city, state and county officials throughout Minnesota. Many of them attended an ARM-sponsored Open House on July 22 to see the pouring and finishing of a section of the ¾ mile-long pervious concrete roadway.

The more than 100 in attendance heard Shoreview Public Works Director Mark Maloney speak about the benefits of pervious concrete. They also viewed a demonstration of the finished product’s performance when 2,000 gallons of water from a Cemstone ready-mix truck was discharged onto the pervious surface and immediately disappeared into the roadway.

The Shoreview project’s pervious concrete is 7-inches deep, with 18-inches of aggregate underneath. Because the curing process for pervious concrete is critical, McTech Ultra Cure Blankets are placed over the surface for a period of seven days to facilitate curing and eliminate water runoff. These blankets absorb and hold water to keep the concrete moist during the curing process.

Because pervious concrete contains no fine sand, water passes through the concrete matrix thereby promoting filtration of heavy metals, suspended solids and even petroleum products. The pervious concrete and its aggregate recharge bed serve as a filter that prevents such materials from becoming runoff that could pollute Lake Owassa. 
 
Pervious concrete also promotes tree growth, lessens the urban heat island effect, and recharges aquifers. And because it can eliminate the need for storm water retention ponds, pervious concrete contributes to improved land management. In the case at hand, the Woodbridge neighborhood had no available land for any type of storm water retention pond making pervious concrete a highly desirable and sustainable alternative.     

As part of its mission to offer green technology, longtime Cemstone customer North Country Concrete Inc. of Ramsey, Minn. started working with pervious concrete in 2007. This is the company’s largest pervious concrete project to date.
