Description:
This was a true community project, involving eight community contractors with the City of Mahtomedi in a collaborative effort to expand the usage of an existing outdoor “dirt rink” slab. Sweat equity and partial donation of time and materials were instrumental in the completion of this project. The local hockey association and Public Works department wanted to maintain the ice sheet for a longer period in the winter and have an expanded usage for the rink slab in the spring, summer and fall. The concrete slab will allow rollerblading in the rink area during the off-season. Budgets were reviewed, a collective job schedule put into place, and the project was completed on time.

Once the preliminary pricing was available, a budget was set. The sub grade material had to be engineered to accommodate the current site materials. There were a half dozen site meetings with the participants to discuss site preparation, scheduling of materials, and manpower. The slab was also engineered to eliminate construction and control joints and to minimize slab cracking. A wet cure was also utilized to help minimize curling, cracking and shrinkage.

Concrete was the material requested by the District Center. Due to the intended warm weather usage and the continual turning of rollerblades, the prevention of rutting on the slab was critical. Also the thermal retention properties of concrete were recognized by the group as the optimal material for extending the service time of the ice sheet.

Cemstone participated in the partial donation of materials, full donation of time, and consulting on the sub grade and slab construction. Cemstone also partnered with local contractors to successfully complete the project and to strengthen relationships between the companies involved and within the community. The discussions of the benefits concrete brought to the project also carried over into discussions of concrete parking lots and potential streetscaping opportunities in the community.
