Hiawatha Bridge

Hiawatha Cable Stayed Bridge

PROJECT NAME:    Hiawatha Cable Stayed Bridge
LOCATION: Minneapolis, MN
CONTRACTOR: Ames Construction
OWNER: Hennepin County

Quantity of Ready Mix Used:  2,000 cubic yards

This bridge is the first every cable stayed bridge built in the state of Minnesota. It was completed ahead of schedule, and required extensive coordination with the LRT Rail and Hiawatha Avenue.  The combination of 6,000 psi concrete with cable suspension allowed an 8” thick concrete deck to span 215 feet and a slim profile.

Major challenges of the job were related to safety concerns with the LRT Rail and Hiawatha Avenue auto and truck traffic. The project required extensive coordination with all parties, and because of this planning the project was completed with zero safety impacts.

The Hiawatha Cable Stayed Bridge showcases the flexibility, durability and beauty of concrete. This project proves that when contractors and vendors work together, the results can be functional, beautiful and cost effective.
